Preparing Loved Ones to Help on Surgery Day

Cataract surgery itself might be quick, but having a friend or family member support you through the process is invaluable. You will need someone to drive you home, since you’ll be sedated and your vision will be a bit blurry from dilating drops or a protective shield immediately after.

It’s wise to brief this person on what you’ll experience – for example, let them know you’ll be groggy and might appreciate help getting settled at home.

Prepare your home in advance with their help: maybe cook a meal beforehand or have easy food ready, make a comfortable resting spot with perhaps some audiobooks or podcasts queued up since you might not want to strain your eye with reading immediately.

If you have a spouse or family at home, let them know you’ll have a simple regimen to follow (like eye drops schedule, avoiding heavy chores for a short while).

Often, loved ones worry about you having eye surgery, so educating them on the procedure’s safety and quick recovery can reassure them too. On surgery day, your companion can also listen to the post-op instructions given by the nurse or doctor – two sets of ears are better than one, and they can help remember timing of drops or follow-up visits.

Essentially, involve your loved ones as part of the care team: their role is to be your safe transporter, your note-taker, and your comfort provider, even if that’s just being there with you. It makes the whole experience smoother and less stressful for you.
